How do I become a Parent Representative?
The Club's Management Committee comprises a Chairperson, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Head Coach plus a volunteer parent representative from all 6 teams.
Expressions of interest in the parent representative positions are sought at the start of each season via the notice board. In the event of more than one person putting their name forward selection is made via a vote taken at team level.
What is the Club’s position on ‘3 line’ hockey and why do all players not get equal ice time?
This is one of the most difficult issues to address and the Club has to balance the development needs of individual players with overall team objectives. The Club's Development Policy provides a broad framework but coaches are alloewd a degree of discretion and are often left in a ‘no win’ situation.
3 line hockey is encouraged where possible but not at the expense of ‘A’ league status, which is vital to the future success of the Club.
Coaches therefore approach each fixture according to the strength of the opposition; in some games it will be possible to give all players regular ice time but in others they will have to rely more on the strongest members of the squad.
What is the Club's policy on training or playing up with the next age group?
The Club's position on this is clear. Players must give priority to their own age group. Playing up a level is a privilege rather than a right, no matter how talented the individual, and will only be sanctioned where the player has first committed to their own team.
What is the position regarding players travelling to away games unaccompanied?
This has been discussed at length following an incident resulting in hospitalisation of an U16 player.
It is unfair to burden Team Managers with this responsibility. The parents of any player under 18 travelling alone must nominate another adult to assume responsibility - and communicate this to the Manager prior to departure.
In the case of Blackhawks and Squaws the 'responsible person' could be another player but that individual must be prepared to stay behind to help until the legal guardian(s) can get to the scene of any incident.
Why doesn't the Club have an Annual General Meeting?
The Club's Constitution doesn't require a formal AGM. An Open Meeting is, however, held each year to brief parents /players on plans, discuss Club finances and the like. This also gives the opportunity for parents to raise concerns over the general running of the Club.
How does the Club decide which coach company to use?
The Club looks for a combination of competitive rates, good service and the ability to respond to fxture changes at short notice. Travel costs represent the Club's single largest overhead and prices are periodically checked with other operators.
Note - if coaches are below usual standards the problem should be brought to the attention of the team manager who will involve the Committee where appropriate. The Club pays a lower rate for buses with no working DVD or toilet but it is worth remebering that when travel is hastily arranged it may be necessary to accept a coach with less facilities than normal.
